First foreign salute to the Stars and Stripes97 views14 February 1778 - The Continental sloop Ranger receives the salute of the French fleet at Quiberon Bay, France.

Earlier, on 4 July 1777, crewmen on board the sloop Ranger in Portsmouth, NH, hoist the first "Stars and Stripes" flag flown on board a Continental warship.
